First Impressions: Make Up For Ever HD Invisible Coverage Liquid Foundation

Quick post to share my first application experience with the Make Up For Ever (MUFE) HD Invisible Coverage Liquid foundation.

Light weight (doesn’t feel as heavy as make up that I’ve used in the past)
Smooth application (it really looked smooth on my skin, evened out my pores and all that good stuff)
Color stayed true (after about 6 hours of having the foundation on, the color was still pretty much the same as what it was on initial application as opposed to my Laura Mercier, which would turn orange on me in a few hours; I’ll show comparison pics below)
Didn’t “melt” very much (of course, this was in combination with the other steps I take when using foundation [Milk of Magnesia, Primer, Urban Decay All Nighter setting spray, and setting powder]; also I didn’t wear it for a ridiculously long time, but I think 6 hours is a pretty long time and I was pretty impressed with the staying power w/ zero touch ups, which was done intentionally so I could give an honest review)

– Still looked like I was wearing make up (which is to be expected because…I am lol)
– Wasn’t a 100% exact match (very very close, like 95-97% which doesn’t suck at all)

On to the pics.

Laura Mercier Comparison Pics

My make up would start out looking like this:

…then end up turning into this orange-y color after several hours if I didn’t do any touch ups:

MUFE HD Foundation

I didn’t get to take pics of how my face looked right immediately after application, but these are pics after the foundation had been on for over 6 hours, with ZERO touch ups.

So for First Impressions I’ll be giving MUFE HD Foundation a rating of 9.8/10.  I’m really looking forward to how this foundation will perform in the long run.  Glad I got to try something new 🙂

First Impressions: Mary Mary “Something Big”

Yaaay!  Haven’t done one of these in a while!  It’s about time!

As many of you know, this past Tuesday, March 29, 2011, gospel group Mary Mary released their sixth studio album entitled “Something Big”.  And that indeed it was!

*Sidenote*:  Dude, they look like TWINS in this shot with the same hair color!!!  AND in the promo shot below too!

They’re also doing a campaign called “Do Something Big” as featured on their Facebook page, where they are encouraging all of their fans to take part in in 6 missions in the community that they hold near and dear to their hearts.  It’s pretty cool! In addition, the duo is currently on the road touring with Bebe and Cece Winans to promote this album.  They’re actually gonna be at the Lincoln Center (Washington, DC) on Wednesday, April 6, 2011 and of course, I won’t be able to make it.  WOMP WOMP!!!

But on to the review!  It’s pretty much gonna be in the format of me going through song by song and the thoughts that first came to my mind when I listened to the album for the very first time.  So here we go!

1.  Something Big – For all you Jackson 5 fans out there, you’ll be quite pleasantly surprised to hear a familiar tune in the album’s opener.  The track actually samples their song “Mama’s Pearl”.  But yeah, as far as the words of the song, the message reminds me of a more updated and hip version of the song “A Wonderful Change Has Come Over Me”.  Not sure if that’s the title of the song but…I know that’s the chorus! lol  Nice way to start of the album.

2.  Something Bigger – One word.  Tightness.  Almost sounds like could’ve produced it, but of course that’s not the case.  Only Warryn Campbell (Erica’s hubby) does their producing (I know that’s right!  Keep that money in the fam! lol)

3.  Blind – really nice song to groove too while being reminded that God’s love for is completely BLIND.  His love for us looks past our faults and loves us despite them all

4.  It is Well – Their modern interpretation of the hymn “It is Well With My Soul”.  I could really seeing this being the next big popular song to sing at funerals.  No shade.  It’s true and it’s a great song.

5.  Never Wave My Flag – This may actually be their next single, or at least I’m assuming since it’s the one they performed on Jay Leno this past week.  Might have just been because of the type of song that it IS lol.  I really could see somebody on ABDC (America’s Best Dance Crew) dancing to this bad boy and killing it too!  It’s a song about determination, perseverance, and strength.

6.  Walking – This was the first single off this album.  Basically about walking that Christian walk no matter how difficult it may get.

7.  Slow Walk – A really quick interlude type thing that features both Erica and Tina of Mary Mary along with Warryn Campbell talking about slowing down and stopping to enjoy life’s moments when life gets too overwhelming and hectic.

8. Survive  (listen HERE) – This track may actually be my favorite song off the album!  It’s about exactly what the title says:  Surviving through the tough days that may come at you throughout this life.  Fave lyrics:  ♫ I had to cry so many nights, I had to hold on for my life.  But I….I survived ♫

 9. Are You Ready (listen HERE) – Another one of my favorites from the album.  When I first heard this song, i had to give it it’s own unique genre that I call gospel-folk-hiphop.  Yup.  You heard it here first! lol.  Sidenote:  I really thought the name of this song was “Get Ya Mind Right”.  Don’t ask.  Just listen to the song lol.

10.  Catch Me – And here began the kinda CCM portion of the CD.  This was a really nice song speaking on the fact that no matter how hard we try, in our human-ness He knows we’re gonna fall and because of His mercy and grace, He’s right there to catch us.

11.  Sitting with Me – Another CCM influenced song.  But even with these two songs, Mary Mary remains true to their powerful vocals and Gospel roots to get their music across.

12.  Homecoming Glory – A little bit more of that gospel-folk-hiphop lol.  But seriously.  Has a sound very reminiscent of Cece Winans’ “Thy Kingdom Come” album, in my opinion.  Reminding us of the hope of our heavenly home.

Overall Impression:  The album is one where each song flows so beautifully into the other and each song is just so well written and powerfully sung and well produced, you really don’t want to even skip a song!  I know Mary Mary especially (along with some other gospel artists who shall remain nameless lol) gets a lot of slack from a lot of people (including myself) for their lyrics sometimes being ambiguous giving their music that crossover advantage because it’s not being “in-your-face-gospel”.  But on this album I guess you could say that there was a good set of “Jesus, God, Savior, Christ” etc. (yes I paid close attention….and counted lol), so that there was no confusion that this was indeed a gospel album and a gospel group.

First Impressions Rating10/10

Mary Mary once again makes another hit album.  I loved it and I think you guys should check it out for yourselves.  And if you like it, get it!  LEGALLY!  How you gon’ bootleg a gospel album anyway???  Now that ain’t right!  lol

First Impressions: Fantasia Frizz Buster Silky Smooth Straightening Creme

Last week I wanted to flat-iron my hair status post washing and putting it into the carefree curls from Weekly Wash #9.  But I wanted to find a new heat protectant that was like a moisturizing agent as opposed to just a serum.  So went to a local store (Walgreens actually) and my eyes gazed upon a product that I’d never heard of before (see below):

Frizz Buster
Silky Smooth Straightening Creme

product image

Loved the ALCOHOL FREE sign at the bottom.  Note the tons of claims on the front of the jar.  In addition here were it’s claims:

[…] ideal for use on all hair types.  Tames, smooths, shines and irons hair straight.  Maintains great moisture balance to help protect hair against damage cause by heat appliances.  Hair stays silky straight and frizz free, even in damp, humid conditions.

First thing about this product that I noticed.  The smell.  It smells soapy….It’s not a bad smell.  Just not that great lol.  But I could live with it.

I went ahead and applied about a dime sized amount of product to each section prior to flat ironing.  And immediately, I was turned off.  While my hair was indeed straight, it was also very stiff.  Not sure if I used too much product or what but this stiff hair was not the business.  Then I noticed that after all my hair was straightened and in the following my days my hair was just extremely dry.  This could also be due to protein overload, but my hair doesn’t usually feel that dry.  No bueno.  Some pics of the final look are below:

So the style didn’t suck.  I just didn’t like the way my hair felt after it was done:  stiff, rough, and hard.  Gotta give this product a 4/10 for First Impressions.  Definitely not impressed…. 😦

First Impressions: Jazmine Sullivan “Love Me Back”

This is SO LONG overdue it’s ridiculous! lol

So Jazmine Sullivan’s highly anticipated sophomore album “Love Me Back” was recently released (and by recently I mean…early November lol).  I definitely went to iTunes and PURCHASED (not illegally downloaded) this album because I love Jazmine.  She has an amazing voice and her music is always the truth.  I like to support good music/artists.

First, let me just talk about the Album cover and the photos in the digital booklet.  Jazmine looks AMAZING.  She has one set where she’s in the black leather (as in the cover photo above) showing her tough side.  Then another set of pics shows her in a white mini-dress and soft curls in her hair, showing her softer more feminine side.  Absolutely beautiful.

On first listen, I could definitely see myself listening to this all the way through every single time.  Her vocals are ON point!  And on every single song.  I’m sure many of you are familiar with the singles “Holding You Down (Goin’ in Circles)” and “10 Seconds” (and if you’re not, shame on you…).

Now I have to give kudos to Jazmine and her team for keeping her material secure because…I can’t find ANY videos of the songs to share with you guys online!!! LOL  Maybe I’m just not looking hard enough or something but.  Hey.  Props to them!  Yall betta make sure Jazmine makes that money…lol

Anyways, my favorites off the album after my first listen had to be:

1.  Don’t Make Me Wait – The song has like an 80’s synthesized vibe to it that I just loved.  The song itself is kinda…loose lol.  If you listen you’ll know what I mean….

2.  Love You Long Time– Yay, appreciation for the fellas!  lol

I got a real good dude and he love me a lot and ain’t no other man is gon’ take his spot and I….I’m so happy you’re mine.  So Imma love you a long time♫

Has a nice lil bit of a reggae feel to it as well (which may be the reason why I like it).  It’s like a hip hop reggae vibe…nice song.

3.  Excuse Me – In an interview, Jazmine actually said she and Missy (Elliot) are really fighting for this to be the next single because it shows a different side to her than her other singles that are a lot of  “I’m mad, you did me wrong, so I’m gonna bust yo’ windows.”  This song is very soft and vulnerable, speaking about how much she appreciates the man in her life.  It’s a very nice ballad and of course Jazmine blows on the track!  And…I actually found an audio for you guys!  Yay!  Not the best quality but I hope it gives you guys a taste and leaves you hungry for more.

(can’t embed but click on the link and listen on youtube 🙂 )

For First Impressions, I definitely have to give Jazmine a 10/10.  This is an amazing 2nd album.  She already has a Grammy nom for “Holding You Down”.  She deserves all the success that’s coming to her 🙂  Get the album people! 🙂

First Impressions: Sennheiser Headphones

Quick and dirty post.  Really…I’m just trying to sneak in a blog for you guys!  USMLE World just kicked my butt I needed some relief so….blogging it is!!! lol

So one of my good friends at school was raving to me about this brand of headphones that she borrowed from another med school friend of ours.  The way she described em, you woulda thought they were the best thing since sliced bread (and they kinda are lol).  And since I was in the market for a new set of headphones (my earbuds are CONSTANTLY hurting my ear canal, all puttin me at risk for otitis externa and crap…lol), I decided to do some research and check em out.

Apparently, Sennheiser, is a German company that specializes in making quality audio products (headphones, headsets, microphones, etc.).  They are supposed to be of excellent quality and help enhance your music experience.

The higher end ones are pretty expensive but the handy dandy WALMART sells them as well (according to my girlfriend that owns them) so of course I had to check it out.  So I went online and found this pair for only $25.74.

Ordered them online and FINALLY got em yesterday and yall.  These headphones are AMAZING!!!!  I’m listening to music I’ve listened to like a million times before and I’m hearing instruments that I’ve never heard before.  Background innuendos that I’ve never heard before.  And the BASS is like outta this world!  PLUS they are SUPER DUPER comfortable.  I would definitely encourage anyone of you out there to check these bad boys OUT!  Cuz they are the truth….”FO’ REAL” *w/ Antoine Dodson head tilt* 🙂

Definitely giving these bad boys a 10/10 for First ImpressionsCan’t wait to use these over and over again for music and studying.  Love em!

First Impressions: Love God.Love People. ~ P&W: Israel Houghton

I am SO glad that one of my good friends invited me to go to a praise and worship session last night led by none other than Israel Houghton.  It was definitely the perfect way to open the Sabbath for me.  Like I said on my Facebook page, he is truly blessed with the gift to set the atmosphere of Praise and Worship for God’s people.  It was awesome.  Plus it was FREE-HEE!  AND I left with a free copy of his newest album Love God.Love People (thanks homie! lol).

In light of that, I decided to do a combined First Impressions and Praise and Worship post to share with you guys my favorite songs from the album.  First some background.

Apparently, Israel went to all the way to other side, aka London, to record this album at Abbey Road.  And you can kinda tell because some of the songs have that kinda European/techno sound (as was brought to my attention last night lol) that a lot of artists are doing now (both secular and Christian) that appeals to the masses.  It’s definitely a bit different for Israel, yet still classic Israel.  He’s just blessed like that *shrug* 🙂

So here are my favorites from the album, just on first listen.  Giving yall my top 3 🙂

1.  Yahweh (The Lifter)
Just the composition of the song in itself is pure tightness.  Then add the message/words of the song, it’s an instant hit.  Love it.

2.  That’s Why I Love You
Right off the bat, I absolutely loved the feel of this song.  And the message is one that we all know and hold dear, “That’s why I love you, because you first loved me.”

3.  Love Rev
This song speaks the truth!  And the music makes me wanna two step…just a lil bit. 🙂

I love the album.  I hope you guys get a chance to check it out.

First Impressions: Queen Helene Grape Seed Extract Peel Off Masque

A lot of First Impressions this week….hmmm…lol

Really Quick.  So my skin was just being super retarded this week.  We always battle consistently on a daily basis anyways (my skin and I have a long way to go… 😦 ), but this week it was just…ugh!  Annoying.  So after trying my usual stuff and getting less than the desired results I decided to try something new, just a face masque nothing drastic.  I did some research online to see what was out there, and cheap.  And tried to stick to a drugstore/beauty supply store line that’s been working for me, Queen Helene.  I regularly use their Mint Julep Masque which is supposed to be good for drying up pimples and what not and it works pretty well.  But this week…*smh*.  Just wasn’t enough.  So I decided to visit my local Food Lion and pick up this item seen here:

Queen Helene Grape Seed Extract Peel Off Masque

Did I mention this bad boy was on sale at Food Lion for around $2.50 (normally priced at around $4).

It’s a typical peel off masque as far as application of the product goes (put on an even layer, let dry for 10 minutes, then peel off, rinsing away any excess).  But what I love is:  1.  The consistency of the product.  It’s a bit thicker (almost like Crest gel toothpaste consistency…if that makes any sense) than other peel off masques that I’ve used in the past, and I liked that.  And 2. I think it really worked for me!

After applying the mask last night (granted that’s not ALL I did, I still did my regular skin reggie), I woke up this morning and my pimples were pretty much dried up and gone!  Granted, (**WARNING:  Please do not read the rest of this sentence if you get grossed out super easily 😛 ** lol), I did pop ’em (yes them, I had like three big ones taking up residence on my face *smh*) but that didn’t really do much cuz they kept “refilling” with the nasty oily white stuff.  Acne-prone skin/acne SUCKS.  So the fact that this dried them up so well that they’re now pretty much nonexistent knocked the heck outta me…

So I’ll be giving this product a 9.5/10 for First Impressions.  It really was pretty much close to perfect.  I will definitely be adding this to my skin care reggie and probably alternate using it with my other masque (Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque).  Let me know if you guys give it a try and if it works for  you 🙂

Love and God Bless,
