Makeup // My Beat Face Products

image

You guys….I think I finally did it!  I found the PERFECT combination of products for a Beat Face foundation routine.  Yes, the journey has been rough. And at times, I felt like it would never end but I found it!  And of course I’m going to share with you guys!

2014-05-04 10.13.34

Most of these products are high-endish, but the biggest surprise for me has definitely been that I have FINALLY found an awesome drug store foundation that does EVERYTHANG I need!  But more on that in a few pics…lol.

Before I actually begin applying my makeup products, I start with a nice smooth base.  I definitely have very oily, acne-prone skin (as you all know) and this combination of products does an AMAZING job at combating the oil and mattifying my face.

image_2

Boots Expert Shine Control Lotion (Target) / Phillips Milk of Magnesia Plain/Unflavored (any drugstore) / CoverFX Mattifying Primer with Anti-Acne Treatment (Sephora)

After I cleanse and tone my face (more on my current facial skincare regimen in an upcoming post), I moisturize with the Boots Expert Shine Control Lotion, then shake up the bottle of Milk of Magnesia (VERY important step as the product separates in the bottle) and apply a few dots on my face and smooth in.  Finally I apply the CoverFX primer then move on to the make up products!

image_3

CoverGirl  Queen Collection All Day Flawless foundation in Spicy Brown (bought mine at Walmart) / NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer in Amdande (Sephora) / Amazing Cosmetics Amazing Concealer in Warm Deep (Sephora) / Laura Mercier Matte Translucent Smooth Focus Pressed Setting Powder Shine Control (Sephora)

I use the Amazing Cosmetics concealer to first cover up all of my hyperpigmented areas (which it does an AWESOME job at) and blend in with clean fingers, then I use my Sonia Kashuk Flat top multi-purpose brush to apply the CoverGirl foundation.  When I tell you this is by far THE BEST foundation I have ever used, I am not even exaggerating.  The coverage is flawless, the color matches my complexion flawlessly, it has flawless all day coverage…are you seeing the key word here? FLAWLESS!  It’s amazing!  AND I actually didn’t realize this until editing this post, but it also contains SPF so absolutely perfect protection for your skin when out in the sun.  I don’t even really HAVE to set my foundation with the Laura Mercier setting powder but me being paranoid about my oily skin, I always do.  And sometimes I’ll still use my Skindinavia No More Shine Makeup spray to set everything once completed.

And that’s it folks!  Of course, I then go on to apply my eye make up, fill in brows, apply highlighter and blush, and of course lip color.  But! Figured, that was WAY too much to include in this one post, but look out for posts on all of the above coming soon!

Hope you enjoyed this post and feel free to let me know what you think and if you’ve tried any of the products I mentioned.

Love and God Bless,

– T

Out & About // Memorial Day @ National Harbor

Did you guys have a great Memorial Day weekend?  I sure did!  Back to work the graveyard shift for the rest of this week but still so happy that I was able to enjoy such a great weekend.

I spent my Memorial Day Monday with my prayer partners and very close friends Nat & Yatta (seen here on the blog before) catching up at the National Harbor.  I’m so so happy to have such great girlfriends (I’m really blessed to have quite a few!) that I can talk to freely about anything, celebrate everything, share one another’s burdens, and pray for each other.  That’s SUPER rare these days unfortunately and I’m SO grateful that God has blessed me with women like them 🙂

image

image

The National Harbor has definitely come up since I was last there!  Being there really just made me miss the DMV even more…*says silent prayer about Fellowship Match*

image

image

image

We had lunch at Redstone American Grill, which recently opened up its National Harbor location this spring.  The food, service, and setting were amazing and I would definitely recommend it to anyone that’s looking for good eats at the DMV area.  Honestly, there are tons of great restaurants at the National Harbor (Rosa Mexicano is another one of my favorites.  That Guac!  Yes LAWD!).

image

image

It was a really hot day (just the way I like it! Hehehe) so I wore one of my favorite dresses, this lightweight black and white polka dotted fit and flare mini-dress with an adorable sweetheart neckline.  My hair was slicked back into a tight low bun (mainly because my fresh press had been tainted by some moisture from the shower the day prior…lol) which was awesome for keeping my hair out of the way on this hot day.  I wore my favorite glossy red lipstick, MAC’s Deeply Adored from the limited edition Marilyn Monroe collection, and accessorized with cute black sandals that I got a few years ago from Topshop and my Phillip Lim for Target Crossbody faux leather bag.

image

image

All in all…I had an amazing day and weekend.  Sometimes, a little time with friends and spending time with family at home is exactly what you need to rejuvenate you for the next leg of your journey.

How did you spend your Memorial Day weekend?  I’d love to hear what fun stuff you did!  Leave your comments below 🙂

Until next time…

Love and God Bless,

POP UP POST // Happy Memorial Day! + My Week on IG

image

Happy Memorial Day loves!!!  First of all, I must say a special thank you to all the individuals that have served and continue to serve bravely so that we can enjoy this freedom that we have. Even something as simple as blogging and freedom of speech isn’t a luxury some have elsewhere and for that I am grateful. Thank you!

AND can I just say that it feels SOOO good to be off today? lol.  I’ll try to remember that when I’m working on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s later this year…*cries real tears* 😦

This past week has been super de duper busy but OH so much fun!!  Definitely one of the best weeks I’ve had in a really long time.

I’ve ventured into the world of subscription boxes, you guys…smh.  I’ve been intrigued by the concept (I mean, who doesn’t want a guaranteed package of goodies to be delivered to their doorstep on a monthly basis??) but also skeptical.  After doing lots of research, and scoping out reviews on YouTube, I decided that Onyx Box and Curlbox would be where I’d spend my hard earned, strictly budgeted coins.  This month I was able to sign up for Onyx Box (Curlbox subscriptions were sold out, as always lol), which features a nail art theme (haven’t received it yet but they ship out this week! Excited!).  I also purchased the exclusive Beautiful Textures Onyx Box, mainly for the Texture Manageability System, but it also came with 3 other full sized Beautiful Textures products (all for just $15!!) that I’ll have lots of fun trying out!  You know the product junky in me got my entire life…lol.  The Texture Manageability System is a heat straightening system (not a relaxer or texturizer) formulated specifically for naturalistas who want the straight look every now and then with a reduced risk of heat damage and a guarantee that their hair will bounce back to their original curl pattern.  After seeing this awesome YouTube review AND curl reversion by MsVaughnTV, I was SOLD!

But then….I got my hair straightened this week so I guess I’ll be waiting to try that out sometime later lol.  I FINALLY found a stylist that I absolutely love and trust completely to straighten, trim, and style my natural/transitioning hair.  If you’re in the DMV, definitely head over to Mane Movement and check out Amanda B.  She is an amazing stylist and treats my hair BETTER than even I do.  She detangles gently, recommends appropriate treatments for your hair’s needs, uses a heat protectant, AND uses a heat setting (on the blow dryer & flat iron) that’s effective but I lie to you not….I don’t feel ANY heat on my scalp. AT ALL!  And for someone that’s gone to Dominican Hair salons for the past however many years, that’s a really big deal!  And the straight look lasts as long as I want it to!  I usually pin curl my hair each night because I like the body & curl (HATE flat hair that I get when I just wrap it…with a passion) and that works to keep my hair looking LAID! lol  And when I deep condition and wash my hair the next time, my curls are back and poppin’! Love her…never letting anyone else touch my hair ever again lol.

Now the reason I got my hair straightened is because as you all know by now, I was invited to be the Keynote Speaker at my former high school, Largo High School’s Class of 2014 Graduation Ceremony (click HERE for more on that)!!! It was such an amazing and humbling experience.  I love love LOVE inspiring young people!  And to know that I’m far from perfect but can still be an inspiration….it’s a beautiful thing 🙂

Remember the collab I posted last week with JusPose Photography and Lauren Larry, LRC of Golden Life Coaching?  Well one of the photos was featured on blackfashionmag.com!!! I’ve submitted and been featured a couple of times before (first time by my fave Jana after our style collab, and then following my last shoot with JCKA Photography).  And each time is just super fun!  It’s cool to know that people kinda enjoy the product of what you do for fun 🙂  And it totally makes me Tumblr famous right? lol

And speaking of JusPose Photography, over the weekend, Justin took a super adorable Sabbath portrait of my family and me!  I love my family so much and I’m so glad he captured that love so well with his lens 🙂

Have you guys gone to see the new X-Men movie “Days of Future Past” yet????  If you haven’t, go check it out!  The ironic thing though is…I’m more excited for the NEXT movie coming out in 2016 after that little sneak peak following the end credits at the end of Days of Future Past.  It has the potential to be soooo epic!!! So yeah…don’t leave after the lights come on and the credits roll on this film.  Thank me later.  Then after that, tweet me so I can share the insight into what promises to be an exciting next chapter in the X-Men series.
HINT: Channing Tatum has already signed on to be a member of the cast for the upcoming film. NUFF SAID! lol

And last…but certainly not least:  Meagan Good knows I exist!!! LOL!  On Sabbath, I decided I wanted to wear this really lovely red wrap dress that I own and was trying to find a lip color/makeup look to really play up the awesomeness of the dress.  So I scoured the net and found this lovely image of Ms. Good.  After imitating the look and posting side by side pics on IG (and tagging Meagan Good, of course…lol), she commented!!!  She said it was beautiful and wished me a Happy Sabbath! (Just in case you don’t know, she’s married to an SDA minister and film producer, Devon Franklin).  When I say I squealed and swooned a million times…I did! lol  I love that Meagan’s inner beauty and faith continue to shine through despite what naysayers may think and express.  She’s such a gorgeous human being, and I love her!

And that wraps up my past week on IG!  Now, I’m heading off to have some brunch with my prayer partners!  Maybe I’ll snap some pics and share more on that later this week but if not, I definitely will post some pics over on my Instagram so go ahead and follow me!

As always, thanks so much for stopping by and supporting this lovely hobby of mine!

Until next time….

Love and God Bless,

Style Collab // Look Good, Feel Great: SS2014 Edition

One of the many awesome things that I really love about blogging is being able to collaborate with some very talented individuals.  For those of you who have been long-time readers, you’re familiar with some of the fun collabs I’ve done in the past including:

Styled by Jane – A collab w/ Jana of The Jane Tales
I Am Not a Model – AMAZING photoshoots w/ “Jonnieface” of JCKA Photography

Well this time around I got to combine “playing model” and styling for a really fun and unique collaboration!

One of my friends from (the real) HU undergrad days, Lauren Larry, RCS, recently became a certified/licensed Life Coach and Relationship Coaching Specialist and is starting out her business/practice as The Golden Life Coach.  And as a part of her golden life philosophy, she (like I do) believes that looking good is half the battle to feeling great!  So she solicited my help to put together a little spring lookbook of sorts, with affordable yet stylish items, of what I would consider some spring essentials for 2014.

I definitely wanted to make this post special because it was for such a great launch/endeavor.  So I enlisted the help of another really great photographer with whom I’ve been dying to work (well….we’ve been dying to work together I should say lol), Justin L. Fulwood of JusPosé Photographyand finally got the chance to do so!  The photos turned out AMAZING!  I’m such a lucky girl to have such talented people in my life! (^_^)

But enough of me blabbing!  Without further delay, here are the 3 looks I created:

What do you guys think of my picks?  What are your essential Spring/Summer 2014 Wardrobe pieces?  I’d love to know so feel free to share in the comment section below!  And let me know if you’d like to see more seasonal style posts like this one because Lauren and I may make this a quarterly thing if you do!

Thanks so much once again for stopping by and showing your support!

POP UP POST // My Commencement Address to LHS Class of 2014

image

Some of you may know that I was invited to deliver the commencement address to the 2014 Graduating Class from my former high school, Largo High School, in Prince Georges County, Maryland.  The ceremony took place yesterday, and it was such a HUGE honor.  I’m still so humbled that they considered and invited me.  Honestly, I really do consider this to be the greatest moment in my life thus far.  Over my own graduation, greater than graduating from medical school, more awesome than match…..Okay nothing so far has been greater than matching into a Pediatric Residency program slot lol.  But this was a pretty close second lol.

It was really great to be able to shake the hands of each of the graduates, look them each in the eyes and say “Congratulations” from the bottom of my heart.  Exactly 4 of them said that they really loved my speech, one said that they loved my dad (he teaches at Largo High School), and one super sweet young man told me I was cute (lol).  I thoroughly enjoyed being a part of this special occasion and after reading my last blog post about my passion for youth, I’m sure you can understand why that is 🙂

So in today’s pop up post, I just wanted to share the speech with you.  I really tried to make it adolescent-friendly and I think I succeeded (lol).  I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed sharing it in person 🙂

LHS COMMENCEMENT SPEECH 2014

May 21st, 2014

Faculty and staff, honorable guests, family members, friends, well-wishers, and of course the illustrious Largo High School Graduating Class of 2014: Good Afternoon!

First of all, I have to take a moment to say thank you to the LHS administration, and my dad, Mr. Paul Johnson, whom some of you may have had as your teacher for a few science classes. Thank you so much to all of you for granting me this amazing opportunity to come back home and deliver this speech to the graduating class. It is truly an honor to stand before you all today to share just a few words that I hope will stick with you from this day forward.

And I promise! I won’t take up too much of your time! I know that most of you are itching to walk across the stage and collect the glossy black portfolio that will house your diploma from this day forward. Or….maybe some of you are just anxious for this day to be over so that you can head to Golden Corral and REALLY get the celebration started! Either way, I’ll keep this speech short and sweet.

To be completely honest, I don’t even remember who gave the commencement speech at my high school graduation ceremony 9 years ago (and now I feel old….) much less what was said, and that may have had to do with the fact that I was sitting on the stage, stressing out over my own Valedictorian speech and praying to God that I didn’t mess up or trip on the way to the podium, which…is not going to happen to anyone here today, just so we’re clear. So if after today you don’t remember my name or who I am, I’m okay with that! But hopefully, something that I say here today will stick with you and maybe even come back to your mind sometime in the future when you may need it.

Over the years, I have received really great words of wisdom, and as I thought about what to share with you all today it was pretty hard for me to narrow it all down to be honest. But thinking about my life so far, I think that I have consistently latched on to 5 of them throughout the years. So in true countdown fashion, let’s start with number 5.

5. How many of you have heard of Drake? Raise your hands if you have….okay, I see you! Well, Drake actually popularized what I would consider to be a really valuable piece of advice and that is “YOLO: You Only Live Once.” Now, a lot of times we use that expression when we’re about to do something life threatening or…..really risky, like going sky diving, pulling an all-niter when we know we should have started on the project 2 weeks ago, asking out that girl that you think is too good for you and will PROBABLY shut you down…things like that! But I really do think this could be applied in a broader sense: You only live once, so make it count. Live your best life because you only have one life to live. Don’t waste it on things, habits, or people that will not allow you to grow into the best possible version of yourself. YOLO.

4. Now this next phrase, it’s kind of ironic that Rihanna has this tattooed on her chest and I’m mentioning it right after talking about Drake BUT that’s neither here nor there. As some of you may know, after Rihanna’s very public battle with domestic abuse, she got a tattoo on her chest that reads, “Never a failure. Always a lesson.” And I think that’s something so important to remember. As many of you head off to college or to start new jobs or even to join the military, you have to realize that you will make mistakes. Messing up is a part of life! And if I had to tell you about all the mistakes I’ve made just up until today, we’d be here for a VERY long time. But the reason why I am able to stand here before you all as Doctor Tonasha Johnson…instead of sadly curled up in a corner somewhere, is that I learned from all of those mistakes and used them as what I like to call “character building moments” to make me a better person. When you mess up, and you will, take those mistakes as lessons to make you a better person. Never a failure. Always a lesson.

3. Now all of us want to be successful, that’s a no-brainer, right? But do you know that there’s a formula that leads to success? Well that’s my next piece of advice to you, so listen closely: “Success happens when preparation meets opportunity.” So many of us think that we’re going to get everything that we want handed to us because that’s our “right”. Well, truth is, the real world doesn’t work like that. The most successful individuals of all time had to endure sleepless nights and put in blood, sweat, and tears to achieve their highest goals. You have to work like the opportunity is right around the corner because one day, it just might be! And the only way you’ll be able to successfully take advantage of that opportunity is if you are truly prepared. Success happens when preparation meets opportunity.

2. We’re getting down to the last couple of points here so stick with me. How many of you have parents, grandparents, friends, cousins, brothers and sisters in the audience here to celebrate with you? Pretty much everyone, I hope, and if you don’t have any of these people here, then consider me your one person that’s here to celebrate with you! But, I say all of that to say this: “No man or woman is an island.” As you venture off into brand new territory, never forget that you need and have support, and you cannot make it to the top without that support. Appreciate those individuals that continue to motivate you to keep going even when you feel like quitting. And right now I just want to take the time to acknowledge my support system, that is here in the audience with me even today: My father, Paul Johnson; my mother, Camille Johnson; my little sisters Tanya and Talitha; and my younger brother Jamal who is up at Morgan State preparing to meet his opportunity (aka his last final of the semester) as we speak. Thank you so much for always being there for me no matter what. You constantly remind me that no man or woman is an island.

1. And last but not least, anyone that knows me, knows that I love my family, I love children and teenagers, I love Chipotle, and I love my Jesus. So I couldn’t leave here today without sharing with you one of my favorite passages of scripture and it comes from Matthew Chapter 6 verse 33: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you.” If there’s one that I have learned in my life, it is that success is truly meaningless without a higher calling. You may have all the money and earthly success in the world, but never forget the Source of all those things. Seek Him first.

Largo High School Class of 2014: This is your time. Make it meaningful and make it count.

THANK YOU!

Love and God Bless,

– T

T Talks // My Passion for Youth…

Just as a heads up…this is gonna be kind of a long post.  But if you’re okay with that, enjoy!

Source

Anyone that knows me (or has ever even come into brief contact with me) knows that I LOVE children!  Which would make sense since I’m in Pediatrics (duh…lol).  But specifically, I absolutely love working with teenagers.  And even though people think that I’m crazy for doing so, once I complete my 3 years of Pediatric residency training (which…side note:  Am I SERIOUSLY about to begin my 3rd and final year?!? Gaaaahhhh!!! lol), I plan to complete a 3 year Adolescent Medicine fellowship training program (by God’s grace) and dedicate my career to promoting and improving the wellbeing of adolescents.

This past Sabbath, I attended my local church specifically at the request of one of the young people there.  He was getting baptized that day and invited me to be there and of course I couldn’t miss it for the world!  The baptismal ceremony was absolutely beautiful!  As he said his baptismal vows, emotions overtook him and he started to weep (yes…weep).  And I had to look away because, I was NOT about to go out like that! I had to keep my THUG intact!  Not even….there is no thug within me…at all…

But when he got into the baptismal pool, and his mom and younger sister began singing Laura Story’s “Blessings”, and he started to cry once again, I COMPLETELY lost it!  Forget the full beat face and thank God for waterproof mascara!  The tears just started falling and the nose started running…it was a beautiful mess lol.

I remember when I first met him, it was shortly after I’d moved to the Allentown area for residency. He had displayed his talents during a Youth Day program at church by painting a beautiful depiction of Jesus wearing His crown of thorns live on stage during a musical performance.  He did an absolutely amazing job, and I told him so after the service.  Over the past 2 years or so since I’ve been in the area, I’ve gotten to learn more about him, and his story is absolutely amazing and very inspirational.  He has such a genuine heart and loves his mom and sister so so much!  So being able to be a part of this special moment in his life was SUCH a blessing and overwhelmed my spirit completely.

For quite a long time (for almost 5 or 6 years), I have felt this urgent call and compassionate desire to minister to youth.  When I was back in the DMV, I was able to do that through my home church:  being a leader in the Adventist Youth Society, helping to direct the youth choir there as well (S/O to MVP!), and just being there for my own sisters and brother when they needed me.  When I moved to PA, I felt a little lost as to where I could serve the youth in my local community and for quite some time I felt very sad because I couldn’t find anywhere that I fit.  But how many of you know that God doesn’t need you to be a part of a formal ministry in order for you to be used by Him in just the way that He needs to use you? Come on somebody! (sorry if I sound preachy….I’m writing this fresh on the heels of listening to a powerful sermon that blessed my everlasting life! But I digress…).  I began to realize that very thing!  God was using me to minister to the needs of the young people around me:  at church, work, randomly.  And I hadn’t even really noticed it.

If there’s one thing that I’ve learned about working with the adolescent population, it’s that social interaction and acceptance is a MAJOR priority.  This is a huge part of the reason that social media is such a big deal….and why youth often get involved in things that can be detrimental to their wellbeing.  They just want to feel accepted…appreciated….LOVED.  And at the end of the day, isn’t that what we’d all like as well?  So I really just started to open up my ears, heart, and home to these young people.  Listening to them when no one else really would.  Empathizing with their struggles when no one else seemed like they were able (or willing) to relate.  Allowing them to spend time with me in the comfort of my home to just eat, sing, play games when they just wanted to escape from life for a moment and have some fun.

I did what I could, where I was, with what I had.  And God took that and made it enough.  And in the midst of me ministering to them, I was blessed as well. Boy have I been BLESSED!

So moving forward, I definitely hope and pray that this passion never fades.  I genuinely feel called to minister to and serve this specific population, and I pray that God continues to guide my path, opens the appropriate doors (ESPECIALLY as I venture into the fellowship application process in the next 2-3 months. Pray church!), and gives me the strength to fulfill this mission WELL.

And for those of you out there that are pursuing your passion as well, and may even have a similar passion for youth, don’t give up!  Submit it all to God; He will guide and strengthen you.  Like He says in Jeremiah 29:11:

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Love and God Bless,

– T

Dressed To A T // Color Blocking for Renee’s Bridal Shower!

This past weekend I had the honor of attending my dear friend Renee’s bridal shower!  I met Renee when I moved to Allentown and she (along with another awesome friend, Kerene) has been SUCH a blessing in my life while I’ve been living out here.  They’ve let me crash at their homes on weekends, eat their food, and vent to them about how miserable I was sometimes (lol); we’ve watched movies together and shared lots of fun times.  I love these ladies so so much! (Shout out to Renee and Kerene!)  And even though getting married means she’s moving away (*insert super de duper sad face here*) I’m soooooo happy for Renee!  She definitely deserves all the happiness in the world, and I pray that she has the AWESOMEST wedding and marriage EVER! 🙂

Kerene, Renee, and Me

At the shower, all the ladies got these ADORABLE plastic fake diamond engagement rings, and I thought that was SUCH a cute idea! I LOVED my little fake ring! I think it looks pretty good on that ring finger, don’t you? Hehehe (lol)

IMG_20140511_134827

My outfit of the day was inspired by a pair of joggers that I saw Krystal over at The Feisty House wear several months ago, and ever since that time, I’ve been on the hunt for an affordable alternative.  Lo and behold, on a recent mall trip (to pick up Renee’s bridal shower gift, actually lol), I wandered over to J. Crew, perused their sale section and a light from heaven shone upon this lovely teal version of the very same joggers!!! Not to mention they were on sale WITH an additional 40% off the sale price on top of that.  Originally $98, ya girl snatched them up for under $30.  Won’t HE do it?! LOL

I was actually inspired by Krystal’s color blocking that she used to style her joggers and a separate photo I saw by another fashionista on Instagram and went for the same color palette.

Coral embellished tank: Charlotte Russe (similar HERE) / Teal joggers: J. Crew / Nude strappy heels: Charlotte Russe (similar style HERE) / Rose Gold Watch: Target (similar HERE) /  Lips: MAC Rebel / Fingernail polish: NARS Nail Polish in Vertebra (limited edition purchased from Sephora last summer) Hair: Twist & Curl out (post on this coming soon!)

And full disclosure: I totally wore that plastic engagement ring ALL day on Sunday.  It’s so adorable!  As much as I’ve thought about getting married and what the wedding would be like, I’ve never thought about what I want my future engagement ring to look like….and honestly, I want it to look JUST like this one! lol.  White gold, simple band, nice sized stone: simple, classy, and elegant.  And now…we wait on God’s timing 🙂

I had such a great time celebrating with Renee and all of her lovely co-workers and friends!  I know the wedding is going to be AMAZING! (^_^)

Until next time…
