Muy Interesante: My Silent Partner

Sharing my devotional reading for today….

And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire [a sound of gentle stillness] a still, small voice. – 1 Kings 19:12, Amplified

When I was a little girl I remember hearing my businessman father come home and tell my mother about his day.  Many times he mentioned that “so-and-so can go on with that deal now; he’s found a silent partner.”

I wondered what a silent partner was.  One day I asked him.

“When two people start a business project,” my father explained, “many times one person has the know-how, and he’s up front doing what needs to be done.  The other person doesn’t do any of the work or have much to say about how it should be done, but he provides the money to get the project started.  He’s the silent partner.  One can’t function without the other.”

That simple explanation was enough for me then, and even now I use it to illustrate a point.  All my life I have been a doer.  If I saw anything that needed to be done, i couldn’t rest until it was done by me or someone else.  I often acted too soon, spoke too fast, gave help where it wasn’t needed, or barged into someone else’s domain.  My good deeds were often misunderstood, and I spent a great deal of time explaining or apologizing, feeling unhappy and full of remorse when neither of those options was possible.

Now that I’m older and learning more about living a Christian life, I have a Silent Partner to work along with me.  My Silent Partner provides not only money but everything else I need.  Unlike other silent partners, He also gives direction and knowledge.  He doesn’t interfere with what I plan to do unless I ask His advice; then He provides me with printed instructions.

He has even given me a special “hotline” I can use at any time or in any place.  I talk over my problems with Him, and He immediately understands.  If I wait quietly, I hear His reply in a still small voice that seems to come from inside me.  He doesn’t speak aloud, but His directions are so clear that He doesn’t need to do so.  I fI begin to do something wrong, He is quick to point out my error.  If I persist and end up in disaster, He doesn’t gloat or berate.  He helps me pick up the pieces and start again.

My Silent Partner’s name is Jesus Christ, and He wants to help you, too.

Stretch Week #1: Curlformers

10 Weeks Post-Relaxer

Here’s also an updated “schedule”.

Had to update it because…I couldn’t wait to try the Shea Moisture deep conditioner.  Both of my new products mentioned in my announcement of this challenge helped a lot. Detangling was a breeze and my hair felt so soft after the DC.  The detangler didn’t leave any kind of residue either.  Just made my new growth very soft and easy to detangle.  See you guys on the next week of the stretch!

This is the stuff that drives me crazy ~ P&W: Francesca Battistelli

Everytime I hear this song it makes me smile simply because I know so many of us can relate.  Sometimes we get so caught up in little things that go wrong that we forget just how much God has blessed us in abundance.  Next time you think you’ve lost your watch or are running late, remember it’s really not the end of the world.  You’re alive, you got food and shelter, most of us have jobs.

Remember just how blessed you are!

Personal Hair Challenge: The Stretch

Hey Guys.  Was just getting ready to head to bed before getting some rest.  All this snow in the DMV just made me wanna blog and be lazy.  But with this shelf exam coming up can’t really do that for extended time periods…but I digress.

I’ll be going out-of-town for a little bit to study for my Step 2 exam and along with the semi-stress of that I’ve been thinking about what to do with my hair.  Last time I want my hair did really well because that’s when I really started washing it every week consistently.  So I was contemplating whether or not to get a relaxer before I go.  This week will make it 10 weeks since my last relaxer on 11/16/10.  I was really trying to stretch my relaxer until at least 12 weeks.  However, as I was thinking about this, I realized that this trip would be the perfect way for me to experiment with stretching out my relaxer, because if I don’t get it done here, I’m not getting it done there; I don’t know how I feel about going to a random to do my hair.  Well I do know, and from past experience, it’s not happening lol.  So, if I postponed my relaxer until I got back to the DMV at the end of march that would be a good 18 weeks of stretching.  That’s 4 and a half months.  I feel like with the proper care and adequate styling, staying away from excessive heat (I will still be flat ironing my hair however) and such, my hair could really thrive and I could possibly see a noticeable difference in its length, thickness, and overall health.

So guess what guys, I’m gonna do it!!!  I even came up with a plan to help me along, in case you’re interested.  I’ll pretty much be using all of my regular products.  HOWEVER, since I’ve been struggling with hair dryness during this winter, and knowing that where I’m going the winter weather is waaaay more harsh than down here, I’ve decided to switch up my deep conditioner and try something new that I saw on one of my fave blogs The Feisty House.

Shea Moisture Raw Shea Restorative Trauma Masque

We’ll see how this works out but it’s supposed to be quite moisturizing which is pretty much what I need.

In addition I’m thinking about purchasing a detangler that I saw on another fave blog of mine, Hairlicious Inc.

Mane N Tail Detangler

Sunshyne (the blogger on the site) stated that she felt it was VERY helpful in detangler her new growth, which would be so beneficial during this process.

Here’s what the plan’s looking like:

I will definitely be keeping you guys posted as I go on this challenge.  I’m sure there will be some struggles along the way, but I think I can really do this!  And hopefully I’ll be able to see some good come of this 🙂

Q&A: Milk of Mag & Powder vs. Liquid Foundation

Hey guys!  So one of my friends asked a question in reply to my last post and I thought I’d share the answer with you all.  Hope it’s helpful for anyone else out there wondering and feel free to ask me any questions about anything on my blog 🙂

Q:

What is this milk of magnesia stuff that u mentioned helps control oil? any other recommendations for preventing oiliness? i’ve found that using a powder foundation instead of liquid helps. what has ur experience been with liquid vs. powder foundation?

A:

Hey girl 🙂

Okay so Milk of Magnesia (MOM) is the main ingredient that you find in Philip’s stool softener stuff and can also be used as an antacid. Yes, I know it sounds ridiculous but there’s the thing.  Physiologically, when MOM is ingested, it acts to draw water out of surrounding tissues to increase water content in stool so it’s easier for people to go. It works in a kind of similar fashion on the face. When applied it helps to absorb any excess oil or unwanted moisture on the face so that there’s less shine throughout the day. I’ve found that when applied under my foundation primer or regular moisturizer it really does help with controlling oil.

As far as powder vs. liquid foundation, I’ve tried them both. And I have to admit that I initially was not very fond of liquid foundation at all because of my oily skin. It would start melting in no time. But I’ve found with the right prepping products (MOM, foundation primer, setting powder, and now this setting spray). Liquid foundation is awesome! It gives really even coverage and definitely doesn’t give the cakey appearance that I’ve experienced with many powder foundations.

Thanks for commenting and I hope this helped! And if you have anymore questions feel free to ask!

Review: Urban Decay “All Nighter” Long Lasting Makeup Setting Spray

So I have definitely been meaning to do this blog post for a while now.  I purchased this product about….a month ago, I think, at my local Sephora because I had heard about it and thought I’d give it a shot.

Urban Decay All Nighter
Long Lasting Makeup Setting Spray

All Nighter Long Lasting Makeup Setting Spray

Description:  (as per Sephora.com)

What it is:
A revolutionary, technologically advanced makeup-setting spray that’s suited for all skin types and keeps your makeup in place for up to 16 hours.

What it does:
It’s the new final step to your makeup routine! This weightless, super-fine mist holds foundation, eyeshadow, blush, and concealer in place so that makeup looks picture-perfect all day long. Temperature Control Technology prevents makeup from a melt down when it’s warm and avoids makeup dehydration and cracking when it’s cold. All Nighter works expertly on all skin types and prevents loss of color, melting, sliding, caking, cracking, excess shininess, fading blush, eyeshadow, and lip color disappearance. AND it’s formulated to resist moisture, so you can fearlessly sweat, cry, or get your Jacuzzi on—you’re guaranteed makeup that always looks just-applied, without ever feeling sticky or tight. Backed by years of science, All Nighter is simply unlike any other product available and keeps you looking flawless with just a couple of sprays on top of your makeup.

Now that’s a lot of promise, isn’t it?  Now that I’ve tried it quite a few times I have to say that it’s not a bad product at all.  I had to experiment with the application process a little bit to see what would work best for me.  And this is what I’ve found is the key for my make up lasting a pretty long time without touch ups:

1.  Apply my Milk of Magnesia and Laura Mercier Oil free primer.  Mist on the UD Setting spray.

2.  Apply my liquid foundation.  Mist on the UD Setting spray

3.  Apply setting powder, eye products, and lip products.  Mist on the UD Setting spray.

So pretty much, I put it on between layers to help everything stick better which for me = longer wear.

So on this particular day, I put my make up on around 9 am and here’s what it looked like then:

And here are a few pics around 7 pm with no touch ups at all ( so yeah, didn’t do the full 16 hours.  I really try not to keep make up on that long…ever lol)

I was sleepy yall…lol

And there you have it.  I think it’s a pretty good product.  This setting spray in combination with my milk of magnesia has really helped to control the oil on my face (because I have pretty oily skin) a WHOLE lot.  Definitely gonna keep using it.  And maybe I’ll try the other spray in the series, Urban Decay “De-Slick” Oil Control Makeup Setting Spray.  They didn’t have this one at Sephora but I saw it recently at my local ULTA.  That may give an even better defense against the oil and shine so I guess we’ll see :-).

If any of you out there have used this as well, let me know what your thoughts are on the product.  And let me know if you decide to try it out for yourself.

Currently Craving: Coldstone Ice Cream Cupcakes

I had these for the first time when I bought them for my sibs’ birthday (shout out to the sibs!  Happy belated B’day Jermer and Tostito!)  and I was TOTALLY impressed!

(I tried the Sweet Cream and the Double Chocolate Devotion)

It’s totally awesome!  FIRST of all, you know the cupcake paper thingies?  The word is escaping me lol.  But it’s made completely of chocolate!  It’s a chocolate cup that has actual cake as the bottom layer, then ice cream, then frosting, then a special topping.

Sweet Cream

Double Chocolate Devotion

Mm mm mm.  Yeeeeaaaah!
